There it is again. I muttered to myself, frustrated as I washed my arm. Every morning for five or six days in the fall of 2003, I noticed this rust-colored sticky stuff that appeared in both drips and smears on my left forearm and thigh. I had no idea where it could be coming from.

Finally, on Sunday morning I found the answer. My eyes followed my hand as I wiped the steam from the bathroom mirror. Looking past my fingertips, there it was. To my shock and horror, the rust-colored sticky stuff easily dripped from my left nipple.

In disbelief, I collapsed into my bedroom chair, swirling with a mix of grief and fear. I stared at the blank white wall, feeling vacant, distant, disconnected from what I had just seen in the mirror. All I heard was that loud, penetrating silence that surrounds and encompasses every thought and movement.

I called my doctor and was told that this was not an emergency room issue, but did need immediate attention. It could be cancer or another of many health challenges. Then, I began to wonder, what now? What is next?

After an exam, the breast cancer specialist made an appointment for that same afternoon to have both a mammogram and an ultrasound. They took two sets of two x rays on each breast and a third x ray of a specific area of my right breast. I realized I could have two areas of concern, not just the one.

Next, was the ultrasound. I could see the area of my breast where they had done the extra mammogram. There was a dark mass which had a very different pattern than the rest of my breast. After the biopsy, I was diagnosed with infiltrating ductile carcinoma, a rare, aggressive, deadly cancer that can quickly metastasize to the bones and lungs. Next is death. I had symptoms of both bone and lung cancer.

The ultrasound of my left breast showed a trail of little beads. Masses unevenly lined up from my underarm to my nipple. This could not be good, I thought. These masses were rubbing against several ducts, causing bleeding and discharge. That was the rust-colored sticky stuff. My left breast was diagnosed with a rare hyperplastic disease involving multiple ducts. My oncologist felt that I also had cancer in this breast. She was deeply concerned, and wanted to immediately remove the mass in my right breast and cut off 1/3 or more of my left breast. From now on, on medical history forms, I would check the box for cancer.

Even before these diagnoses, I had already decided that I did not want surgery. In my heart, I really did not believe I would live through a surgery, much less the chemotherapy or radiation. I preferred an alternative approach. I did have my health insurance to pay for most medical expenses, but it did not cover alternative therapies. Also, I had previous long term health challenges. Many of us invest quality time and energy into our personal development. We buy inspiring books, sometimes with the workbooks or journals that complement them. We discuss psychology with our friends - or we look for friends with whom we can have open discussions on the subject. There is activity in our mind - at times a little bit of confusion. We encounter so many different lines of thoughts, so many tools, so many exploratory exercises we can do. It's as if we were in the middle of a dense, majestic forest...

Then, maybe it happened to you, you reach a point where you don't feel satiated anymore after reading the hot new self-improvement book...The workshop just feels like another workshop... Philosophical discussions feel more like empty calories...It's not that your head is full: it's more that you are hungry. You are hungry, because you have tasted - sometimes chewed - the wisdom you have read or heard, but you haven't digested and integrated it. Don't we benefit from relaxing and taking a break after a good meal?

I think none of us have ever seen, written in the back of a book, "You don't need to read me - all the wisdom is within you". No publisher would be so open-minded (or masochist)... Besides, we are the ones who have to figure out for ourselves how we can best use the resources available to us - how we can use them to connect to our own inner wisdom, inspirations, intuitions. Other people's insights are guiding lights. We don't need a zillion guiding lights, in fact we get lost if we are surrounded by too many of them - they point in too many different directions. Their role is simply to show us possibilities, which we can consider... and once we have chosen something to be our truth, we close the book, we turn the light off, and we get in touch with our own inner guidance.

One simple concept can drastically change our life. It can be, "Love yourself ", it can be, "Be all that you can be", or "Fear is an illusion"... But none of these makes real sense, no concept will truly transform our life, if it's not integrated in every cell of our body, if it doesn't feel as tangible as if it came from us in the first place. We keep reading and listening to "teachers", and "experts"; but who's the best expert, when it comes to you, or when it comes to me?

I believe nothing in self-growth has to be hard and complex. You can sit in silence, you can look inside yourself with wide open eyes, and you will "see", or feel, the precise wisdom you need at that exact moment. It's not always exactly what we want to hear - in fact, often it's not, so we refuse to accept it - but sometimes that's what self-growth is about, that's what we really need to bring ourselves to the next level. That being said, it's easier sometimes to face a book, or another person, than it is to truly face and accept ourselves. And let's acknowledge the fact that we often prefer complicated answers, and techniques.

"Self-sabotage" is a strong word... What I tried to convey with the provoking title

is that, at some point, the energy we dedicate to self-growth resources may better serve us (in terms of self-growth) if we invest it elsewhere: in introspection... in basic down-to-earth actions... in meditations... or maybe in fun things...

Sometimes we have an endless to-do list that causes us major stress, and instead of simply doing what must be done, we will read a book on relaxation, do yoga, or else... Sometimes we are a little gloomy, we just need to loosen up, laugh, and have fun... but we will attend a workshop on a subject we think will provide us answers. Not that it won't! Obviously, none of this is "bad" - sometimes it may even be the most constructive things to do... but what I'm highlight here is that sometimes, it's may not. Finally, I guess my point is: "self-growth can be everything, you have access within yourself to all the wisdom there is, and you are magnificent beyond what you can imagine".

Bonjoie! 7 Lessons I Learned in Paris

After reveling in a mountaintop experience, it often takes one a couple of days to not only regain altitude and perspective; it takes a little while to fully grasp what-exactly-just happened.

Such was our trip to France.

Escorting thirty-six young musicians to Paris for a three-concert tour proved to be an amazing experience which I cannot fully communicate in this Newsletter. My words will fall short; our pictures will miss most of it; and stories re-told with enthusiasm to eagerly awaiting family members will only reveal a glimpse of the experience. What happens when vision meets strategy, passion meets energy, and divine inspiration meets faith cannot be comprehended by those missing the mountaintop. But because it is now part of who I am, I feel moved to attempt to share it with you.

Paris was, for me anyway, the fruit of nearly fourteen years of musical training in my kids. And it found my heart bursting with joy as I celebrated it. After listening to "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" played mostly with less-than-perfect intonation upwards of ten thousand times; of the foot-stomping, the eyeball-rolling, and the &I hate the violin' when my children were too irritable to practice; of the 90-minute roundtrip weekly drives to Westport for lessons: watching not only my own Ben and Cristina, but the orchestra kids aged twelve to eighteen, perform Beethoven's "Fifth" and Barber's "Adagio for Strings" in a medieval cathedral in the center of Paris left me ebullient. Tears stained my cheeks as the music moved and carried my soul to a height previously unimagined. Friendships forged with the most unsuspecting partners, as commonalities were uncovered and shared. Barriers erected by political divisions, theological differences, and ideological disparities collapsed under the international love language of music.

It was an extraordinary experience, and I learned a few lessons along the way:

1) We stand on tall shoulders of the spiritual giants who lived before us. When one visits a city with cathedrals still standing after the frenzy of the Crusades and the numerous battles fought there, one realizes the magnitude of the spiritual convictions of those who came before us. Studying the Chartres Cathedral-and walking the halls of La Trinite and the Magdalena Cathedrals where our children performed-allowed me not only the luxury of admiring stained glass windows depicting prominent Biblical themes; it allowed me to ruminate on the vision, inspiration and dedication with which they were crafted. In earlier times in Paris, religion was not a part of life. It was life.

2) Art, music and literature are necessary components for creating a life worth living. As are good shoes, good mattresses, and good books necessary elements of every childhood; good art, good music, and good literature provide needed nourishment for the soul. Wandering through the rooms of the Louvre-and my favorite museum in Paris, the Musee D'Orsay-gave me even greater appreciation for the importance of fabulous art. They don't call these guys masters for nothing. I am convinced that the world would be both safer and happier if everyone learned to paint, played a musical instrument or sang in a choir, and read classical literature on a daily basis. Music remains the universal language of the heart; anyone who does not understand this had better start listening to Mozart.

3) Celebrate serendipity. Already a lesson explored in both my book as well as in earlier Newsletters, it is worth repeating here, as I witnessed, embraced and practiced what I preach. Most of you may know by now that I have an inordinate amount of passion for the color lime-green (or illness, depending on your perspective). It was pure serendipity that, while walking down a Parisian street in search of French ceramics and candles, we stumbled upon a lime-green sofa setting against a bricked store wall. I started laughing hysterically. Where but in Paris would I find a lime-green sofa in the middle of the street? I promptly sat down in it, reveled in the experience, and allowed it to be captured in film. It was serendipity that, while walking around a tony shopping district, I was grabbed from behind, only to find a Parisian lady who spoke no English attempt to communicate to me that her surname was "La Coq" and could I please tell her where she could buy the Vera Bradley backpack I wore which sported roosters and eggs? I happily told her-in English-that it was no longer available but sign-languaged her to get out a paper and pen so I could write down the internet site where she might have some luck. The serendipity of that encounter still makes me smile. Perhaps it was serendipity that our tour guide was darn near perfect; that our flights were uneventful; that our hotel was perfectly situated; and that the Parisian orchestra, which played in a joint concert with us, was well-prepared and delightful. Serendipity or angels watching over us: we celebrated each and every tiny victory.

4) Food plays a huge role in the celebration of life. To be French means to have a passion for all things related to food. They unapologetically indulge in the culinary arts and enjoy all of its inherent stress-relieving side benefits on a thrice-daily basis. They endorse a &live to eat' rather than an &eat to live' M.O. And it shows. "Take-out coffee" is an oxymoron. It simply does not exist in France. Coffee is meant to be drunk sitting down, preferably with a friend or two, along with a baguette or a sugar-or-chocolate-filled crepe as well. While French women may not get fat, American women visiting France just might. I embraced the French dining philosophy for eight days and came back with more "wiggle in my waddle," if you know what I mean. Que sara sara (or is that Spanish?)

5) Charm and charisma still work. They are not overrated. From the hotel staff to Parisian waiters to the clerk at the Ralph Lauren store: all met our needs with grace and charm. When an unsuspecting yet magnificent floral arrangement brought a constant tickle to my throat, the "Polo clerk" ordered up a glass of water for me. It was delivered on a cloth napkin atop a silver tray. (When was the last time that happened to you stateside?) When our orchestra met up with the community orchestra for a joint concert, we were-every one of us-enthralled by its Parisian conductor, Sylvan. Young and vibrant, he exuded charm with his humility and gracious behavior toward us; the hot pink tie against his otherwise all-black "uniform" proved once again, the magic of charisma.

6) "Bonjour" means something. The French refuse to start a conversation without it. Once, when I barged into my explanation of needing several Eiffel Tower charms for bracelets without the mandatory "Bonjour" opening, the store clerk stopped me mid-sentence, interrupting my banter with "Bonjour, Madame, how can I help you?" How wonderful to be reminded at every turn that today is, indeed, a good day!

7) "Bonjoie" means even more. Late on the second night of our trip, bubbling with energy and excitement after traveling to the top of the Eiffel Tower, I accidentally said "Bonjoie" (jwahr) rather than "Bonsoir" (swahr). Sarah, the perfectly-fluent chaperone to which I directed this mis-step, proclaimed: "Happy joy of life to you, too!" Giggling my way up the escalator to my hotel room, I didn't quite realize the extent of my error. But the next morning on the bus, everyone greeted me with "Bonjoie." And so it stuck. It became our password for life in April in Paris. I can think of none better.

Our children shone like sugar-coated gumdrops sprinkled around the streets of Paris, dotting major landmarks and sweetening each and every meal. I was thrilled and honored to have been part of an event of such historic significance for our young and tiny youth orchestra. They were goodwill ambassadors for our symphony, our town, and our country. Never have I been more proud as a music lover, a parent, and as an American. Perhaps my experience sheds some insight on how you, too, can celebrate life.

It's an opportunity for employees to mingle and "let down their hair."

A well organized company picnic with planned activities can help integrate employees with each other. This is particularly important if the company has undergone recent reorganization. As such it functions as a "team bonding" mechanism.

A company picnic can be held for an entire firm of thousands or for a single department of 30.

In my role of party entertainer (and prior to that corporate employee), I have attended countless such events. Here are some observations, tips, and ideas I picked up along the way.

General Considerations
Like any other type of event, you need to decide what you want your picnic to be like and how much you want to spend.

As with any event, it is important to keep the needs and tastes of your attendees paramount.

Allow yourself sufficient time to book your venue if the picnic is offsite. Demand for some venues is at a premium during peak periods. It is not uncommon to make reservations several months or more in advance of a given date.

You'll need to plan food and beverages, and activities and entertainment and, in some cases, transportation to the picnic site.

Allow enough time so you can give your employees sufficient advance notice to include the picnic into their plans. This is especially important if you'll be inviting family members or if it is held on a weekend.

Company picnics and company picnic ideas can range from the very simple to a pull-out-all-stops extravaganza. My observation is that people have a good time at both.

Do you want to have a theme? A theme is fun! Plus it makes it easier to organize food and activities.

WHEN do you want to hold you company's picnic?
Here, in the Philadelphia area, companies hold their picnics beginning in June through early October.

Considerations such as your company's workflow, availability of a desired venue, etc., will help you determine the date. Employees are less apt to be away on vacation in June or September, but they will really enjoy the chance to kick back in July or August.

There are pros and cons to weekday picnics versus weekend picnics.

Company picnics held during a workday will ensure a greater attendance for employees when they would normally be in the office. And, they don't cut into precious personal time.

But spouses and children are generally more available for a weekend date.

WHOM do you want to invite?
Staff only? Members of the employee's immediate family? What about significant others, friends? Decide where to draw the line.

Family picnics are a great way for employees to meet co-workers' families. It humanizes co-workers by allowing them to relax their at-work personas.

On the other hand, single or divorced employees can feel like the odd wheel at a very family oriented event. That can be overcome by planning activities suitable for people of all ages.

Activities that require participants to form groups can help integrate the attendees. And it keeps your guests occupied.

WHERE do you want to have your company picnic?
While many picnics take place under a tent in the company's parking lot, offsite venues can make people feel more relaxed. If you're on a strict budget, one option is a nearby state park. Many have large pavilions ideally suited for such events.

I've also been to company picnics given at the home of the firm's CEO or owner. This kind of setting adds a homey touch to the festivities. In some instances, facilities were set up so that the guests attend to their needs without entering the host's private home.

An excellent option to consider is a venue that is set up especially for hosting the company picnic. Generally these picnic parks come complete with in-house catering and lots of games and activities for kids both big and small. Some day camps rent out their facilities on weekends when they are otherwise not in use.

Amusement parks and river cruises are other options.

Tip: Have a Plan B in the case of rain.

Some Plan B options include: �€� A tent with walls or access to an on-site building
�€� Event insurance
�€� A rain date

Keep in mind that if you opt for a rain date, your vendors and entertainers may require additional payment to reserve the second date. That is because they have to turn down other clients during the busy summer season to keep that time open for you.

Food and Beverages
If you choose to have the food catered, you don't have to worry about preparation or cleanup. Many venues such as picnic parks have in-house catering. And many caterers specialize in handling company picnics.

The best part of picnic fare is that it is simple and satisfying. Hot dogs and hamburgers are extremely popular at picnics. But they are not compulsory and caterers will cater to your every whim.

Keep the menu flexible enough to accommodate those with special needs and preferences. These days you'll find many meat eaters and vegans, not to mention devotees of Atkins, South Beach, and other diets. Muslims and Jews may not wish to eat pork.

So having at least one non-pork and non-meat option is an excellent idea. If your picnic has a theme, your menu can reflect that.

Decide whether you want to permit alcoholic beverages. If so, make sure there is a way to ensure that anyone who drinks a bit too much makes it home safely.

Have age appropriate activities and games
Some venues such as picnic parks make it a point to supply many activities. Nonetheless, you may want to supplement them. Entertainers such as DJs, caricature artists, Tarot card readers, magicians, face painters, clowns are some popular additions.

Door prizes are a cherished company picnic idea at many firms. Door prizes work both as employee appreciation and an incentive for the employees to linger.

Examples of some prizes I've seen include certificate good for a dinner for two at a local restaurant, gift certificate at a local department store, a day off with pay, even a free vacation complete with round trip airline tickets.

These are some company picnic ideas and planning tips to get you started.

But the most important tip is the one I save for last. After you've worked so hard to organize and plan your event, be sure to go and enjoy the festivities yourself!

Do you have all the business you could possibly want or need? If you're like me, you're still growing your business. Marketing is an ongoing item on my agenda, and I'm always looking for new ways to market my services. Where do you begin the process of attracting more business? How do you get the ball rolling in the direction you want your business to be heading? Well, it's really simple. Start planting seeds! If you can start your garden growing this spring, why not start your business growing too?

You can start by telling everyone what you do, including those people in your life you see every day. Talk to your hairdresser, dentist, financial advisor, or babysitter. You just never know who they might know who may want or need your products or services. Leave business cards with those people, so they can hand them out to others who may be interested in contacting you. That old saying that includes the line "the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker" may just ring true after all.

Plant seeds everywhere you go. Typical ways to market your business are fine, but the best way is by simply using word-of-mouth. "Who do you know..." can be a very powerful statement when you are talking to others about what you do or what you sell. Let your presence be known. Be creative! I have a Team 100 list of the top professionals I know. When someone either in my professional circle or my personal circle is looking for a particular service, I'm able to refer them to someone I know and trust. All of the professionals on my list are able to refer me to those they know as well. It's a win/win situation. My name is on their list, their name is on mine, so the seed has been planted, and keeps growing.

These are just a couple of great ideas to help you get started in growing your business (if you want more business that is!). Taking some small action every day is better than doing nothing at all. Following a simple action plan consistently will most likely lead to several great opportunities down the road. Who knows? If you put in the effort, you just may find new business knocking on your door instead of the other way around.

Spring into action...and watch your business grow by leaps and bounds!

Without a commitment to your business, you will fail. Make a COMMITMENT and see your plan through to completion.

T-TENACITY

Have tenacity to persist and see it through. Back to the road trip. If you get a flat tire, do you give up and go home? Not likely, you fix it and continue on. Don't allow little things to stop you from the big things you have planned for your business. Focus on your goals and plans and be persistent. Have TENACITY and don't give up.

Use ingenuity to find the workable way. When an obstacle appears, pull out your road map (or plan), take a look at it and see if there are other routes available that will keep you on track to your destination. Seek advice from the locals (or other people in home businesses similar to yours). Your ability to use INGENUITY will directly affect your business' success.

Use objectivity for an undistorted perspective. Take a break, a breather, step back, clear your head every now and again to maintain your objectiveness in making decisions for your business. Take a moment to survey the lay of the land on your road trip, it will make travel much easier. OBJECTIVITY gives you the ability to see things in your business clearly.

N-NAVIGATE

1000 Questions for Couples - THE Book of Questions

Have you ever noticed that when someone is interviewed on radio, television or in the newspapers about a particular subject, it tends to be the same people? You may even be saying - "Why don't they ever ask me?"

Well the reason is - they don't know about you. If they did know that you were an expert on a particular subject, then there's a good chance you'll be asked from time to time. There are various ways to make yourself known to the media. One way is to write a News Release. Send the media a news release when you want to announce:

A new product or service -

A new marketing campaign -

A new address -

New staff or someone being promoted -

Any other newsworthy information about you, your business or your people.

Editors, radio and TV producers receive tons of information from individuals and companies trying to get publicity for their business. However, they need information that is newsworthy, relevant and interesting for their audience.

There are guidelines for writing and laying out a news release - if you don't meet these guidelines then your release will probably get dumped immediately.

A News Release needs

A contact person - In the top left-hand corner of the first page put the name and telephone number of a person who can provide further information. If it's your name then okay, but an editor would expect to see someone else's name rather than the business owner. If you have an assistant, put their name or your partner's name - if they work with you.

Date - In the top right-hand corner. You also need to state when it can be released, if it's for immediate release then - put those words. You may want it to be released on a particular date - if so, give the details.

Headline - You need a headline that summarises the story and grabs the editor's attention. Write what you might expect to see in the particular publication or hear someone say.

The Body - Write your news release on one page if you can; two pages maximum. Up to 250 words double spaced and a maximum of four paragraphs. Always write in the "third person" not the first. Make your information exciting and human, think about what would grab the attention of the readers. Include a quotation from a customer if you can; for example - Fred Smith, Chief Executive of Apex Software said - "This is the most exciting new product to be introduced to our industry this year!"

Here are a few other points to consider when writing a news release:

It's not a sales document - This is news information, it is not an advertisement. You don't want words like - "Wonderful - Fantastic New Service. If an editor thinks you're just trying to get a free advertisement then it'll be dumped.

Think of questions - Be prepared for any questions you might be asked if an editor phones for more information; you don't want to blow it if you get to this stage.

Get a name - Find out the name of the person to send it to, if it's aimed at the business community send it to - John Brown, Business Editor, XYZ newspaper. If you can't get the name over the phone then, send it to the Business Editor or the Lifestyle Editor. You can usually find the name of the person you want from the latest edition of the publication you're sending it to. If it's for radio or TV, phone and ask - "Who should I send this to?"

Media services - There are media distribution services that'll send out your release to all the relevant people - for a fee

PR Company - You could employ a PR company who'll do the whole News Release for you. They know how to write it and who to send it to. They'll also have contacts - journalists, TV editors, producers. They can often get you an interview with these people.

When it comes to debt consolidation some people dream of day when all their bills will disappear. Next to hitting the jackpot, a debt consolidation loan is some times the only way out for a debtor. No more playing "pick the bill out of the hat" to see who gets paid, all you have is one affordable check to write each month and pretty soon the balances quickly disappear. WAKE UP! Come back to reality, it isn't quite that easy, however if you do it right it works pretty well.

Different Ways to Consolidate

People ask me "What's the best way to consolidate debt?" and of course "What's the catch?" Well, it just really depends on the situation. There are all sorts of ways to do it and some folks get really creative too. I'll tell you about some of the more popular ones and the pros and cons you get with them.

Just remember because it looks good doesn't mean it is. The advertisers now a days are pretty good about disguising those higher interest loans with payments that go on forever because all you see is the lower payment. So try and ignore that sweet pitch for a lower payment if it means you just dug yourself a bigger hole and put yourself deeper in debt.

First things first. Let do a little wake up call. If you are just barely trending water because you are in to much debt, just realize that not all these options will work for you. And some times, no of them will. If that's you, keep your head up high and don't drown. Many people can really cut their debt without ever consolidating.

And don't forget, if you do decide to get a debt consolidation loan, don't think the fairy god mother is going to make thing all better. After all, once you do a debt consolidation you will still have to make a payment until that loan is paid off.

Home Equity Loans

If you have been paying on your home for a couple of years, put a pretty big down payment when you got it and are lucky enough to be in one of those areas of the country where the home values shot through the roof, you may be sitting on little piece of freedom in the form of equity in your home. To get to this little nest egg you either have to sell your home or borrow money against it. And so enters the home equity loan. Another little thought...If you still owe a considerable amount on your home, IGNORE the ads for home equity loans for more than the value of your home. If you want to be a stickler about it there are actually two different types of home equity loans. The first, which is my favorite, is the home equity line of credit (HELOC), it uses the equity in you home like a credit card. You can use a little as you want or up to your limit, and once you pay it down enough you can keep on doing it. It's very useful when done correctly because most of them have some sort of interest only option which will give you greater flexibility. Hence, that's why it's my favorite. And the other type is a fixed amount, rate and term. Your payment stays the same all the time. Just to make this simple when I talk about a home equity loan it will refer to both of these types.

Many people use home equity loans for debt consolidation. They will often get a pretty good interest rate, and since you can deduct interest payments on their taxes, making the "real" cost even lower. But, of course there is a down side, you must use your home as collateral. Which is just a fancy term to say if you miss your payment I can take your house. And There goes the roof over your head...Literally!

Consider a Home Equity Loan for Debt Consolidation if:

You won't be leveraging your home so much that you are borrowing pretty close to, or more than, the current market value of your home.

You can pay it back in 5 years or less

You are in debt because of unusual circumstances, like an unexpected accident or hospital bill, but for the most part you have excellent money management skills.

DON'T use a home equity loan for debt consolidation if:

You are going to have to borrow 100%-125% of your home's value. Interest rates are high on these types of loans not to mention you will be stuck in your house and won't be able to move for any reason for a very, very long time.

Your marriage is on the rocks. Separation and divorce may not make it possible for you to remain living there. Especially if you have a court order to move. Not to mention you would loss a great deal of money if you had to short sell it (You would still have to pay off the mortgage before you can sell it)

Now if you think that you are in debt because you just don't make enough money...well, I am surprised you made it this far. With that type of thinking as soon as you pay off your credit cards you will just find another excuse to charge them again, then your home will really be at risk.

Credit Cards

Consolidating your debt on a credit card comes off as a pretty bad idea; however it can actually be a great resource if done correctly. Credit cards sometimes offer some of the lowest interest rates around and they are easier to acquire than most debt consolidation loans, but the best part is that they don't require collateral like your home equity line does. That is an important thing if a bad situation pops up and catches you unprepared. You can either call your current card company and find out what their interest rates will be on a balance transfer to their card, or if you are like me you get tons of offers in the mail for companies offering to consolidate your debt onto a credit card you can choose the best one. A big warning here...READ THE FINE PRINT! Make sure if you transfer the balance it will help you not hurt you. I give more tips on how to handle this in my FREE newsletter so make sure you sign up.

Consider using a credit card for debt consolidation if:

You can get a lower interest rate; make sure it is a fixed rate and not just a low intro rate, that's how they get you. Please Read The Fine Print.

You never pay the minimum payment, and they tease you with a really low one, and you pay as much as your budget will allow each month to get rid of the debt quickly, after all that's what this is for.

You close out the accounts that you are paying off so that you don't go on a shopping spree. A word of caution if you close too many account it will hurt your credit score.

Don't use a Credit card for debt consolidation if:

You can only get an interest rate that is higher than what you have because you have bad, dinged, or a bruised credit history.

You are just so addicted to your credit card that you can't bear the thought of getting rid of one or more of them.

You lack consistency in paying your bills on time. All those late fees start to add up pretty quick at $25-$30 a pop, and then you pay 18%-30% interest on the late fees...what a racket! Don't get caught in this little trap.

Retirement Loans

I'm not going to give a lot of detail on this one because I think it is a bad idea and only should be used to save you from bankruptcy. There are too many big negatives other wise to consider this option for debt consolidation. You loss your tax benefits and may have to pay a penalty if this don't go smoothly for you. Not to mention the big kicker that if you are borrowing money from yourself that means your money is not working for you but against you. Not only that if you lose your job or quit you most likely have to pay off the loan immediately. After you learn a few things about investing you will see quite clearly how this is not such a great option even though it's the easiest to get.

Debt Consolidation Loans

Even though they may seem to be the best choice or even the most logical, it still may not be your best bet. A debt consolidation loan is an unsecured personal loan, and they can be difficult to get if you already have a lot of debt. The bank doesn't like to give you a loan if you monthly payment on your debt not counting your mortgage is more than 15%-25%, depending on your credit, of your gross monthly income (before taxes). The bank feels like you are just going to go and charge back up your balances, which happens all too often. Because of those big negatives the going interest rate on these types of loans are about 15% or more. These are definitely not the best interest rates compared to the other items we discussed so far. However, if you can get a debt consolidation loan with an interest rate better than what you have right now it may be beneficial for you to get one.

Consider a Debt Consolidation Loan if:

You are willing to close your credit card accounts so you don't end up in the same trap everyone else does and dig a deeper hole of debt.

The interest rate you will be paying is lower than what you are paying right now on any debts that you would consolidate. Make sure the term is not more than 5 years or you could be falling into a different trap altogether and end up paying way to much interest for the term of the loan.

Don't use a Debt Consolidation Loan if:

the most obvious reason is if the interest rate is way too high.

The term of the loan has been extended to 10 or 15 years. It will show you a really cheap payment but wait until you add up all the money you will be paying back you won't consider it a good deal then.

Counseling Agencies

As the ads on late night TV and cable claim to be able to consolidate your debt i.e. "bills", into one small monthly payment "no matter what your credit history". Every once in a while you these ads are for a home equity loan, but more recently they have leaned to more often promoting credit counseling agencies.

Counseling agencies go to the lender and negotiate a lower interest and/or fee. After that you end up making one monthly payment to the counseling agency, Which then pays your creditors. Their fee is lumped into the monthly payment. A lot of times you could have done much better of for yourself if you would have dealt with the creditors personally. This is not really a debt consolidation loan since you don't really refinance anything, it more like debt restructuring. If you can stick with the program you can be out of debt in 3-5 years.

The biggest fear people have when dealing with the counseling agencies is that the agencies will ruin their credit. Quite honestly if you are already behind on your bills and haven't been able to put a dent in them, a counseling agency debt consolidation program is not going to make your credit much worse than it already is. It will make your score drop a bit, but when you look at the benefit of being debt free a few years down the line it's a lot better alternative to declaring bankruptcy.

Consider debt consolidation with a counseling agency if:

You are falling way behind on your bills and there is not another alternative. These kinds of counseling programs are for people who are having problems paying their bills on time, not for people who want a lower interest rate.

Most of your debt is not a secured loan. In other words a car loan, home loan, or a student loan. Since there is collateral involved the counseling agency has a harder time renegotiating the terms.

Don't do debt consolidation with a counseling agency if:

You know yourself better than anyone else if you can't stick to a little program for a week or a few months by all means don't try and do this program that is going to take a few years to complete.

You haven't done you due diligence and thoroughly checked out the company. Since they are acting as a mediator and you are paying them they can screw things up really quickly and you will still be held responsible (it really does happen check out the news release section) Make sure you choose an agency that will give you the support you need for the long haul...3-5 years.

Protect Yourself

Be wary of credit counseling organizations that:

-charge high up-front or monthly fees for enrolling in credit counseling or a Debt Management Plan.

-pressure you to make "voluntary contributions," another name for fees.

-won't send you free information about the services they provide without requiring you to provide personal financial information, such as credit card account numbers, and balances. -try to enroll you in a Debt Managment Program without spending time reviewing your financial situation.

-offer to enroll you in a Debt Managment Program without teaching you budgeting and money management skills. -demand that you make payments into a Debt Managment Program before your creditors have accepted you into the program.

Creative Alternatives to Debt Consolidation

Now it's time to start to use that space between your ears, your brain. Just because none of these options work for you doesn't mean that you should give up! You have made it this far.

Borrow against the cash value of your life insurance policy. If you've built up a cash value in your policy, you should be able to tap it at a low rate. Best of all, it doesn't have to be repaid. The downside is that your loan will decrease your death benefit, so make sure you have enough coverage to protect your heirs. (You may want to buy a supplemental term policy.)

Make it easy for yourself call all your credit card companies and get them to change the due dates that are more convenient for you so they fall all on the same day right around payday. This way you sit down once or twice a month to do your bills instead of 10 different days.

Think of Debt Consolidation as one of the many tools in you arsenal to get yourself debt free.

Ever have a prospect start out your sales call by asking you "so how much does this cost?" as the first question out of his mouth? How you handle this question, and subsequent ones like it, will greatly influence the outcome of your sales-call.

Right now is an excellent time to examine some of your beliefs about selling. Do you believe that this is a reasonable question for the prospect to ask? Would this be one of your first questions of a seller if you were the prospect? Do you agree with saying's like "The customer is always right."?

If you agree iwht most or all of these beliefs, would you then answer his question directly with a price? Just because the prospect asks a reasonable question does not mean that the smart thing to do is to answer it. Doing this at the very least could cost you money that you did not know the prospect had. And, doing this could cost you the entire sale, if the prospect prematurely rules you out because you are "too expensive".

People make buy, no-buy decisions for emotional reasons. Imagine that your buyer looks at a scale on which she weighs the emotional consequences of her decisions. If the sales call begins with your answer to "how much does this cost?", which way do you think her scale tips? Gee, you don't know because you haven't had the chance yet to ask about this buyer's budget or financial resources. Unless you are lucky enough to be priced right within her budget, chances are this scale is going to tip very negatively against you. And you are rapidly on your way to losing this sale. In fact, you may not even get a chance to finish this sales call now.

How do you tip the scale towards the positive, towards you? Ask questions to help the buyer discover his emotional reasons why he wants and needs your product now. Ask questions that uncover the consequences of not buying from you. Take control by turning the prospect's question to you into a question back to him. This question could be as simple as "Do you mind if I ask you some questions first to see if you even need any of my products/services?"

Take control of the sales call up-front, and tip the scales in your favor.

It started with my need for a new

Kitchen Design - a complete guide

mixer. OK. Well, maybe not exactly. It probably really started when we bought our home in Connecticut two years ago. The kitchen needed a make-over. Not a complete renovation--as some do--but a make-over, to be sure. Its footprint was fine, as was its size. Windows and doors were good, too. But it was dreary. Dark, drab and dreary.

But a re-do--no matter the scope--was out of our reach at move-in, just as it is now. So I've tried to not think about it too much.

That's tougher than it sounds. What with me being a "visual person"--energized by color and proportion and pattern--and kitchen tours taking up space on every New England town's calendar within the next few weeks, it's almost impossible to not notice renovated kitchens. Nor to salivate over their inevitable appeal.

Such was the case this past Friday when a friend and I tromped through six fabulous kitchens in an annual little ritual. Carefully calibrated to Mother's Day--not to mention the bursting of daffodils, the budding of most trees, and the flowering of rhododendron--it coincided perfectly with spring fever.

And so it was that my friend, Nancy, and I enjoyed most of the afternoon together...roaming around gorgeous homes, indulging in wonderful treats catered by local restaurateurs, and commenting on what both appealed--and what didn't--to our strong aesthetic sensibilities. Nancy is an artist, too. And she just finished her own dream kitchen a few months ago. So she has not only a good grasp of the whole kitchen re-do thing; she has a similar eye to mine and is highly motivated by strong visuals.

Interestingly, we were both struck by exactly the same things. An enormous, albeit completely-perfect home, didn't do it for either one of us as it did for a friend whom I bumped into while there. "Isn't this absolutely incredible?" my friend exclaimed.

Nancy and I looked at each other.

"It's perfect," I dead-panned.

Too perfect. Perfectly painted, perfectly appointed, perfectly accessorized, perfectly clean. Was it possible real people really lived there? Could anyone have ever actually saut�½ed onions and garlic at its immaculate stainless-steel Viking range?

As we walked to the car, Nancy and I reflected on what truly makes a home, anyway. And where does one stop? In this real estate frenzy of the new millennium, where success is measured by capital gains, square footage and location-location-location; how much is enough, after all? Do we really need commercial-grade stainless steel Wolf ranges and double Sub-Zero's? Granite countertops and farmhouse sinks with copper faucets? Islands with pull-outs?

Seems like we do.

Finally, Kitchen Remodeling Ideas, Tips and Techniques For The Homeowner

A Harvard University study found that Americans spent $233 billion on remodeling and repair projects in 2003, with kitchen re-do's topping the list. A stunning 4 million Americans will do a kitchen remodeling project of some type in this year alone!

Staggering in scope, it is easily understandable. We have everyone from Home Depot to Pottery Barn to Williams-Sonoma to Target to HGTV to thank. Oh, sure. You might not need a kitchen transformation. But seriously, do you have enough fortitude to walk out of Williams-Sonoma fiscally unscathed? And have you seen the summer plastic ware at Target? As if I needed another lime green line item in my home...it was pure will-power that prevented me from grabbing a dozen of the cutest soda-fountain-style tumblers in my favorite color on my weekend outing there.

I read recently that most people do a major kitchen remodel for one simple reason: their friend did it. Oh great. A brilliant tax break? We get that. Increasing the value of your real estate. Get that, too. But peer pressure?

It's easy to see why. I mean, a wonderful kitchen is a lovely thing to behold. I totally get it. Want it. But can't yet have it.

So in case you're in the same state (and I have to suppose that many of you are, given the success rate of these kitchen tours) here are "5 Strategies for Infusing-Your-Kitchen-With-Beauty-If-You-Don't-Have-The-Designer-Kitchen-You'd-Really-Like-To-Have-But-For-Whatever-Reason-Don't:

1) Inject bold bursts of color. Be it via woven placemats at the breakfast table, colorful pottery on your countertops, or brightly-painted kitchen towels hanging from your oven bar: use generous strokes of color to put your brain on a heightened state of alert. Your cabinets might be dreadfully tired and your outdated appliances might leave you feeling totally uninspired. But take heart: a few brilliantly colored decorative objects can provide just the punch your sleepy kitchen needs.

2) Treat yourself to one new kitchen accoutrement. Seen Le Creuset's latest red Dutch ovens? Or Kitchen Aid's new apple green mixer? How about a shiny chrome coffee grinder? If a total kitchen overhaul is out of your reach, perhaps one modest indulgence will give your room that little kick-in-the-pants that it needs.

3) Change the lighting. My Country French rooster chandelier ala my latest birthday, elevates my eyes upwards...out of the direction of my drive-me-crazy-cabinets and onto something much more beautiful and intriguing. Considering its relatively minor expense, it proved a clever way of adding serious visual interest to a space which otherwise drags me down visually. Shop around. While not as cheap as a new box of candles, a new lighting fixture is often a great way to go.

4) Change things in stages. Perhaps by giving your cabinets a new paint job, you can change the look of the whole room. My girlfriend, Leslie, contracted with a house painter as well as with a decorative painter to dramatically lift her entire kitchen into a veritable work of art. The decorative painter glazed and then hand-painted different floral designs on each cabinet panel, elevating the room into one of lightness and pure beauty. The end result is stunning! Maybe by simply replacing a worn-out dishwasher you can inject a dash of modernity to an otherwise out-dated room. Or perhaps the relatively easy job of changing your countertops will give you more of the look and function that you desire.

5) Enjoy your collections. Not only did my recent trip to Paris cement my affection for le coq; it heightened my awareness of any and all fabulous renditions seen since my return. I can hardly pass by a rooster without checking its craftsmanship, size and price tag. Infuse your environment with the things that you love. Be they pictures of friends and family magnetized to your fridge...or cows or pigs or roosters (we really are a silly bunch, aren't we?) don't be afraid to show off your collections to their fullest. When your day is looking particularly gloomy or your hormones are raging; the little things that bring you joy will help to blow both those black clouds away from your precious little head as well as more evenly distribute those swirling shivers of estrogen.

Finally, reflect on the relativity of materialism. Nancy and I-walking back from "house perfect" on the kitchen tour, talked about how it's all relative anyway. For what seems like extravagant indulgence (or a vulgar display of wealth, depending on your perspective) is just that: it's a perspective. It's all relative. What seems ridiculously unnecessary to me might seem perfectly legitimate to you. And remember that most of what we possess is viewed by some 90% of the world as pure luxury. Keep perspective. If your kitchen drives you nuts, try to maintain some level of thanksgiving for what you do have, rather than some level of misery for what you don't.

The kitchen isn't called the heart of the home for nothing. It's where we put love into what we put into our body. Where we infuse our food with energy. Where we sift and dice and shake and bake. Where we laugh and learn and read and relax. Do your part to make it the heart of your home...whether you like the way it looks or not.

I wound up getting a new mixer for Mother's Day. As bizarre a request as it was--coming from someone whose least favorite word in the English language is "practical"--I got the desire to actually mix something up in there. (Bake a cake...or something along those lines, anyway.) And I have a funny feeling it will actually send me into my kitchen more often...whether I like it or not.

Like Hyundai and Kia, the Korean manufacturer Suzuki has accepted the difficult task of trying to infiltrate the sub-compact market dominated by Honda, Toyota and Ford.

Its new 2004 offering is the Forenza, a front-wheel drive sedan offered in three models, the S, LX and the top-of-the-line EX. All models have a 2.0-liter, 126-horsepower, 16-valve engine. The LX and EX models include 15-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, keyless entry and alarm, power sunroof and fog lights as standard features. The EX model I drove for a week includes standard leather upholstery.

Cruise control, air conditioning and AM/FM/CD and cassette system with eight speakers are also among the long list of standard equipment.

Still, the Forenza faces an uphill challenge. While priced under $16,000, the new vehicle's appealing design and well-considered appointments can't overcome a few all-too-apparent drawbacks.

During my weekly test drive, the vehicle had difficulty starting on several occasions and its limited horsepower doesn't bode well for needed power in a tight spot, like a sharp uphill stretch at altitude.

Likewise, the four-speed automatic transmission has a less-than-smooth shifting mechanism. To maneuver between gears, the shifting handle has to be pushed down before it's engaged into gears.

Nonetheless, the Forenza does have impressive considerations. The exterior was designed by Pininfarina, noted for its Ferraris and Maserati contributions. The lines are clean, if basic, and they give no impression of the vehicle's classification as a subcompact.

The remainder of the vehicle has a varied pedigree. Suzuki is the transformation of the bankrupt Daewoo Motor Company, Ltd. It's assembled by GM Daewoo Automotive Technologies, which was formed by General Motors after it purchased Daewoo's parts.

Like its attractive exterior, the interior of the Forenza is far from an afterthought. The look is simple and clean, and the brushed aluminum console accents the leather seats nicely. Instrumentation is straightforward, lighted well, and the seats are comfortable and well positioned.

Considering its market position, the Forenza can't be expected to be noiseless, and it certainly isn't.

I had only one long-distance passenger during my test drive, a 6-foot, 185-pound friend. He said the passenger front seat was comfortable, but otherwise nondescript.

Like other new vehicles, the Forenza has an untested resale market, and that places it -- at least for several years -- at a great disadvantage to its popular competitors.

Suzuki is also hoping its transferable seven-year, 70,000-mile warranty, roadside assistance and loaner car provision will attract economy- minded buyers seeking a less-expensive alternative to some of the country's most popular vehicles.

If you are planning on flying somewhere with your dog, she will probably have to go in the cargo hold. This can be stressful for dogs, as the cargo hold is noisy and cold. Most airlines will not allow you to take your dog with you during winter weather -- it is simply too cold for a dog!

When traveling with your dog, always keep in mind her safety and comfort. She should have plenty of water to drink at all times, but since she will be less active during the actual traveling time you can probably cut back on her food a little bit.

Think about where you might be staying

Where are you going to stay when you are traveling with your dog? If you are planning on staying in hotels, be sure you know their restrictions and policies regarding dogs. Some hotels will not let you leave the dog alone in the hotel room. If you want to attend an event that prohibits dogs, you will have to arrange for a pet sitter for a few hours. If your hotel caters to dog travel, they may be able to help you locate a local pet sitter.

Maybe you're going to stay with friends when you are on the road. If your dog likes to jump on the furniture you should bring along a couple of old sheets to use as cover slips. Your friends will appreciate this touch and will be more likely to welcome you back for future visits with your pup.

Your dog will feel more secure if you bring some objects from home. Although she will be happy to be with you, if she has her bed and a few toys she will feel more comfortable and less anxious. This will make dog travel more enjoyable for everyone involved.

I've seen it too many times to count.

A couple gets married and begins to build a life together. Then the kids come, and with them more responsibility and stress.

Dad is on the fast track to success in his career. Like so many men, he gets seduced by the idea of making it to the top of his profession.

Only one problem: As he climbs to the top, he forgets to bring his family with him. (This can, and does, happen to both men and women. But the situation I describe is what I see most often in my office.)

He builds his life around work; she builds her life around the kids.

In a manner of speaking, he has an affair with his career, and she has an affair with the kids.

The wife and children may have ``knocked on his door'' for the husband's attention but he has not been answering, sometimes for a long time.

Typically, there have been many fights over mundane things, while what the family is really searching for is a sense of connection.

By the time the pair arrive in my office, they are roommates at best, and complete strangers, or sometimes enemies, at worst. As we begin to look at what the problems are and what we can do to fix them, the inevitable, and earned, resentment comes bubbling out.

``We never see you! All you do is work, work, work. You even missed Jimmy's baseball game.''

His response: ``I can't help it! I have to provide for my family, someone has to pay for all this!''

The problem here is that a grain of truth (``I have to provide for my family'') has been taken and so twisted and bent out of shape that it is destroying the family.

What does it really mean to provide for a family?

In the simplest terms, it means to be a full and complete partner in this adventure we call family, in everything from doing dishes and giving baths to entering into your partner's emotional world.

Let's put some hands and feet on this notion of being a providing partner. It takes more than your presence. It takes full participation in all aspects of the family. Here are just a few ways in which full participation is needed:

Child rearing. Kids need both parents. This is such a simple notion, yet so profound. In everything from changing diapers to mending broken hearts, dads need to be actively involved in the nurturing of their children.

Domestic chores. It's really sort of simple, isn't it? Both people live in the house, so both should have an equally proportionate share of taking care of it. I've heard it said that real men don't do windows. Real men do whatever is necessary for the family.

Time. This is the active ingredient in nurturing children. Forget the cliche about quality time. Simply spend time together, doing something or doing nothing at all.

Planning. Joint planning for the family's future needs is a task that is easily overlooked and left to chance. But in his book ``Tender Warrior'' (Multnomah Books, $16.99), Stu Weber calls this the ``provisionary heart'' of a man. It means to look ahead and plan for the needs of the family.

Intimacy. This can still be difficult for most men. For men,

Deducting Your Auto Expenses

Auto deductions are a very complex topic. So, to clarify, we are not going to attempt to cover all of the intricacies of the subject. Instead, we will cover some of the most-used provisions and provide you with a better understanding of some of the associated issues.

In keeping with one of our primary strategies, what we are interested in doing with our automobiles is to convert as much of their use as possible to legitimate business purposes.

That's because personal auto use is not deductible. As a result, the object here is to maximize the amount of auto use you can attribute to business purposes and document that usage properly.

Strategy One: The Actual Method vs. the Standard Method

Tax Deductions

There are two methods that you can use to deduct your automobile usage. For the most part, you can choose the method that provides the greatest method to you. The first method is the "actual"(expense) method. The other is the "IRS" (standard) method.

The Actual Method.

This method requires that you keep track of your actual auto expenses and then compute the percentage of business use. So, you can deduct the business percentage of all operating expenses such as gasoline, insurance, licenses, maintenance, cleaning, etc.

Your parking fees and tolls can be deducted in full.

One simple way to track your individual expenses is to put them on your company credit card. That way, your monthly statement will provide you with a breakdown of these costs. You should also put them into a tax diary to have the most complete documentation possible.

Most accountants are comfortable if you give them an approximation of the percentage of time you use your auto for business. Your daily diary will help to substantiate this amount. I often hear them suggest a figure between 70% and 90% if you are a full time business person.

As a result, you will attribute that figure (say 80%) as a business deduction and the balance is a personal expense. Note: if you use this method, you cannot switch to the standard method later on.

The Standard method.

The Standard Method involves tracking your actual business mileage use and multiplying the number of business miles you drive by the IRS rate.

There are three different ways to track your mileage. You may choose the method your prefer.

Strategy 1a. The three ways of tracking your miles.

Method #1. This is called the Every Day, Every Trip method. This is the most complete method. It requires you to track each and every trip that you take for business purposes. You must notate your miles at the beginning of each business trip and again when the trip is completed. Then, subtract the difference and you've got your miles traveled. It is best if you actually keep the notation of the beginning miles and the ending mileage in your diary. If you want a really thorough record, you should document your business use and personal use each day. But, let's face it, most of us have better things to do with our time.

Method #2. Another method that is acceptable to the I.R.S. is to track each trip you take for a period of three months. The three-month period is considered a good reflection of your average auto usage for tax purposes. Then, all you need to do at the end of the year is multiply this number by four to determine yearly usage.

Tax Strategies, Tips, and Deductions

Method #3. The "one week per month method". With this method, you track each of your business trips during say, the first week of the month. You repeat this each month and take an average of your mileage as your deduction. 2002 Rates: This year, the mileage deduction is 36.5 cents per mile.

Simplified Technique:

There is a short cut to tracking your mileage. Most people have a certain number of places that the travel to regularly. It may be certain of your client's offices or a hotel where you meet with people regularly. You can determine the miles once, and keep it on file. For example, keep a record in your diary that it is 55 miles round trip to a particular client's office. Then, each time you travel there, simply use the already established mileage in your diary.

Hot Tip:

As outlined above, most people track the mileage that we incur for business purposes and forget about the mileage traveled for personal use. As a result, the assumption is that you are driving for personal reasons, and you only record a trip if it is for business reasons. To use a computer term, the "default" is personal mileage and we only get to deduct what we actually track. If you forget to track a particular trip, you lose the deduction.

There is an alternative that may prove easier for you. Make your "default" business usage, and only track the personal miles. So long as you do this consistently, this is perfectly acceptable to the I.R.S. and, for those of us who use our cars mostly for business, this method substantially limits the amount of record keeping we must do.

Whether you use the actual method or the standard method is a decision that you should make after consulting with your tax professional.

Strategy 2: The Two Car Strategy.

The purpose of this strategy is for you to get a greater tax benefit if you already have two cars: one for personal use and one for business. So, if you already have two cars in your family, use this strategy to your advantage, but don't go out and purchase a second car just to implement it. This strategy takes into account not only the typical costs associated with auto usage, but also the depreciation expense as well. You can imagine that if you only drive one car for business, the maximum business use percentage you can achieve is 100 percent. If you drive two cars for business, is it possible to drive both the first and second car 100% for business? Yes! That's because your business use is based on the business miles that you drive.

But, can you still get a net benefit of using two cars for business even if you use the second car less than 100% percent for business? Again, the answer is yes.

Part of the benefit is that you can depreciate what is called the "basis" of your car. Because the "second" car was used for personal purposes, you determine its basis on the day that you convert the car to business use. On that day, you determine its basis by comparing cost and market value of the car and using the lower of the two.

Here, the cost is what you paid for the car originally plus any capital improvements that you have made to it. For example, a capital improvement would be any amounts you spend to re-build or re-place the engine. So, if you purchased the car several years ago for $8,000, and today it has a retail book value of $5,000, and you haven't made any capital improvements, your basis for computing depreciation is $5,000.

Tax Help

The point here is that simply by converting some of your usage of your second car over to business use, you can get far more benefit than the 2% of the business usage that you "give up" on your first car. The lesson, enroll the use of your second family car into the business.

Note: There is one disadvantage of the "two car" strategy. You cannot use the simplified tracking technique outlined above. You must track the actual usage for each business trip.

Change to the Old Rule: The old rule allowed the maximum standard rate for only the first 15,000 business miles an auto was driven during a year. And, once the auto had accumulated 60,000 business miles at the maximum IRS optional rate that automobile was considered fully depreciated and you had to switch to 14 cents per mile. Under the new rules, the per mile rate applies to all business miles. There is no 15,000 mile annual limit or 60,000 mile maximum.

Strategy 3. Buying vs. Leasing Your Auto:

The rule for tax purposes is: Buy your cars, don't lease them, to obtain the best after-tax return on your car investment. Reasoning: The after-tax cost is greater to lease than to purchase both business and personal cars. The difference is about 10% in favor of purchasing.

Contrast this with a wealth building concept. You should buy appreciating assets and lease depreciating assets. Under this rule, it would seem that typically, your better option overall is to lease your vehicle because it is probably a depreciating asset.

Note: This might not be true for certain collector's cars, etc. that appreciate over time.

The bigger picture:
If you plan to drive the car for two years or less, lease it. If you plan to keep it for four years or more, purchase it. In between two and four years, it's a tossup.

So how do you reconcile these conflicting rules? Here are a few more guidelines that set out the non-tax leasing advantages. Leasing is a good idea if you meet a few of the underlying criteria:

1. Your financial income does not vary from year to year.

2. It is important to drive a new vehicle in your business.

3. You don't like to own cars for many years.

4. You generally drive less than 15,000 miles per year.

5. Your credit rating could use some improvement.

6. You hate auto repairs and dislike leaving your car at the "shop".

7. You are an employee who uses a car for business and don't have the money to purchase the car with cash.

8. You quickly tire of the same car.

Strategy 4. Identify supplies and equipment used to maintain your business car.

Look around your basement and garage, or wherever you store tools and cleaning supplies. Make a list of the items you use on your car. You will probably find a battery charger, battery cables, and maybe even a battery tester, and various other tools. You can deduct these items two ways: If the cost of the tool is more than $100, it should be capitalized and depreciated. If the cost is less than $100 for an individual item or group of small tools, its normal to expense such items in the year they are purchased.

Proof: Since you will be sorting through old acquisitions, it's likely you won't have receipts. Take photographs because they can represent reasonable substitute evidence.

Strategy 5. Deduct the Cost of Garaging Your Car

If you must pay separately for the cost of keeping your car in a garage, you can deduct this cost as a business expense. Your call to action.

Decide on the best way and most convenient way for you to track your auto expenses. Which of the four methods is most practical and beneficial to you. Review the different ways with your accountant or C.P.A. Also, determine if you can take advantage of the two-car strategy.

Cash Is A Position. Using Repackaging to 'Go Big' with your Online Biz.

I go to the Money Show every year to visit with friends who have booths and are speakers. Then when folks are filing out of lectures I listen to their comments on what I know the speaker has been saying.

The Money Show is for investors from all walks of life; however, my guess is the median age is close to 60. Those who go have accumulated a nest egg and now are retired or very close to retirement.

Money Does Grow On Trees

They came to learn more about how to make their money grow.

Last year there were 256 separate events not counting what was given in the Exhibition Hall. Almost without exception speakers were showing how cash can accumulate faster if the listener bought his product whether it was a mutual fund, stock, bond, partnership or who knows what. Are there that many money makers out there?

One speaker had an hour telling the market was due to crash and the thing to do was buy long term put options. He also said if you would not do that to buy some government bonds which were paying about 2 to 3%. The exit comments I heard were pretty well summed up by one lady who said, "Is he nuts. How can we live off 2%?"

When you are in a bear market the old saying is, "He who loses the least is a winner". No, you can't live on that small a return, but you can lose large sums by trying to be invested at all times. There have been many years in the past where cash with no percent return beat the heck out of the stock market.

Go back to 2000 and remember the NASDAQ lost 78% of it value in 3 years. Since March 2000 investors in the 50 hottest-selling mutual funds have lost an average of 42% according to the Lipper Analyst. Fidelity Magellan, the largest fund at that time remains a loser of 23% and Janus, 4th largest, is down 45%.The Buy N Holders have still not recovered their investments.

If you had sold out near (I did not say at) the top, say within about 10 or 15% your account would have been pretty darn healthy when it finally did start back up. You would not have lost 30 to 40% or more of your hard-earned money. That is what I refer to as a "reverse profit".

If you had put a loss limit on your portfolio of 10% on each position and taken out just enough to live on it probably would that have been less than letting it stay invested in the market? You can easily check that.

Putting 100% of your money in a money market while the market is declining does not mean you are not invested. You are invested - in cash. This protects your savings from huge losses that can and do occur regularly in market cycles. I have written about those 16-year cycles previously.

The smartest investors set a limit from where they bought from the highest price their equity has reached as to where they will sell if it starts going down. Usually 10% is the rule of thumb, but it can be 5% or 20%. That is your choice.

All investors must learn that cash is a position or they are sure to lose their money.

Come to understand the concept of 'Repackaging' or 'Repurposing'

When I go to the grocery store in the month of November, I always shake my head in admiration. The reason is it's pretty obvious what the Big Chocolate companies have done, isn't it? They've taken the same chocolate product and changed the packaging (switched the giant plastic bags for high-end boxes.) It doesn't matter if it's Cadbury, Hershey or Lindt...you're looking at the very same chocolate only put to a new purpose...helping us celebrate Christmas instead of Halloween. Brilliant. And a critically important lesson for online biz owners.

So here's the question to ask yourself:

"What intellectual property do I have that I can (quickly and with relatively little effort) repackage and sell to a new set of customers?"

Answer:

Step 1: Start by listing your current inventory of intellectual property.
Dig deep and don't overlook the obvious. If you've created a one-page website, terrific, put it on your list. Other things to list include lesson plans, graphical banners, audio clips, TeleClass titles you've led, even the list of ideas in your notebook is part of your IP inventory...you don't have to have a website. Other more traditional items are CD sets, workbooks, assessments, your ezine, eBooks, etc.

Step 2: Now brainstorm how to make your material new again.
Make a list of how your current inventory can be repurposed. Can your eZine issues be compiled into an eBooklet? Maybe your eBook can be chunked into 52 issues of a weekly tip eZine...perfect to attract visitors to your website. Do this for as many items in your inventory as you can, and by all means list as many new purposes for each that occur to you. Filled in, this worksheet will become your list of "gold nugget" projects, to return to when time or budget permit.

Step 3: Choose one item and act.
I get asked every day "why do some eBusinesses succeed where others never get off the ground?" The answer is they take full advantage of the leverage they can get out of their intellectual property. By choosing one item on your list to repurpose, and following through on it, you don't just create new products for your online shelves (a great thing in and of itself.) Simply by applying the concept of repurposing, you increase the value of the time you spent creating your original offering.

Your time and energy are now "worth" more than before you read this lesson.

For all those who are dabbling in the online world, but want to go big...good for you for starting a few things. You're right on track! Now your job is to repackage what you've got and serve your customers in as many ways as possible. Not everyone who goes out for breakfast wants their eggs scrambled. As an online business owner, your customers are waiting for you to offer them the choice that suits them best, all the way from sunny side up to eggs benedict and back again.

Repackaging existing intellectual property for long term online success has such a strong track record, I'm hard pressed to think of a truly successful online business that doesn't do it. So once you get the hang of it, try going one step further and make sure new projects are developed with a good "repackageability quotient" from the start. Every new product you create can and should have three or more uses. When that starts happening naturally, you'll know you've fully integrated this strategy into your online biz.

Business people often have what seems an insurmountable problem, but somehow with time and a little patients most issues seem to lessen or work themselves out in time.

Larger companies have experts in technical, marketing, PR and sales fields but for the one man or woman Internet business things seem to get beyond our knowledge level and outside our control.

As a one person business we often wear more than one hat. Simply put we are the secretary answering the phone, make appointments, write sales letters, build Web sites and do all the menial tasks like empting the rubbish bin, being the mail clerk to acting as a sales consultant and at the same time having the title of CEO.

How would you describe your duties if you operate a small Internet type Business.

Many people have a number of skills that lend themselves to operating a successful Business, but where do you turn for help in a difficult situation or you get out of your depth in removing an unwanted bug on your computers hard drive?

Depending on your field of knowledge and your problem there are indeed many places to look or to seek help.

Providing your computer hasn't totally died the Internet is one of, if not the biggest and best help resource you will ever find. You have the world (world wide web) at your finger tips.

There are literary hundreds of thousands of experts and tens of thousands of web pages written about your exact problem or the difficulty you are experiencing.

If you have money to throw at any problem that comes your way that's great, but for the average small business this is not always possible.

Properly approached, many experts will share their knowledge with you and will be glad to share, it knowing that they are helping a fellow Internet user in distress.

But first, before you ask for help it is always best practice to clearly work out the exact problem or symptoms even document them. If you want to perform a task involving your computer or something to do with a Web site, conduct a number of searches in different search engines and using different search phrases.

Just sometimes you will find the exact software you are looking for, but called something that you would not have thought to search for.

For example I have wanted to create a table containing a number of cells on a Web page with a 1 pixel boarder. Usually when you set a 1 pixel boarder in Dreamweaver for a layout table you end up with each cell having a boarder, thus having a 2 pixel wide boarder between cells.

Looking at the problem I found by accident by setting a background color for the layout table and setting a 1 pixel wide boarder and with a 1 pixel cell spacing. By not setting a boarder color, the background color showed through between the cell spacing providing the cell had a different color background to the layout table. Thus I have created a 1 pixel wide color boarder between cells.

My problem was that I was trying to change the boarder width which may or may not be able to be done, had I looked at other ways of achieving the same result. Now if I had sat down and wrote down my problem I may well have solved the problem, because it now looks so simple.

It's a bit like the monkey trying to get the apple out of a jar. The apple easily fits through the opening. The monkey has the mindset that he needs to use his hand to pull the apple out of the jar but when the monkey puts his hand in to grab the apple the opening in the top of the jar is not large enough for the monkeys fingers and the apple to come out together.

This was how some hunters used to catch monkeys as the monkey would not let the apple go, to his demise and capture.

Think outside the square, brain storm, analyze the problem. Once you have a clear picture of the problem you are then in a far better position to look for an answer.

By knowing exactly what you need the answer to is half the battle. Understanding how a search engine works, how it lists sites and how to best conduct a search is an art in itself and goes a long way to finding the answer.

If you are wanting the answer to anything relating to search engines, Web site building, software, computers and a whole range of other stuff, check if there is a forum on the subject. If there is, then all you need to do is join the forum and check to see if the subject is already covered or select the most likely forum heading to ask your question or to seek advice.

Many experts are happy to help others and remember at some stage in the past they probably asked the same question.

There are notice boards, Internet groups, networks and a range of interactive avenues where you can communicate with other Internet users with similar interests.

Here are a few to check out. Yahoo Groups, Ryze network, Google answers, Google Group, About.com, ICQ Users, MSN users, AOL Groups.

If you belong to an Internet Company there will be FAQ or help pages and a contact email where you can seek support. Many companies now provide a forum for their members too.

When it comes to email and direct marketing there are so many so called experts who charge for their services or ebooks containing their new revelation on marketing. Much of this information is on the Internet and is free to access, the difficult part is discerning the gold nuggets of wisdom from the fools gold.

This can be an illness, an engine blowing up in your vehicle, a tree falling on your house or any number of catastrophes.

Knowing this, the first step in getting out of debt is to change your attitude. You must decide that you will no longer accept living in debt and unprepared for life's uncertainties.

You must decide that whatever it takes, you will do it. Without this intensity it will be difficult for you to succeed. Without this intensity new cars and the shiny advertisements will draw you back into debt.

Remember, the first step to staying debt free must be an attitude change.

The resulting lawsuits could spell big trouble for the penis enlargement pill pushers. It could also spell the beginning of the end of those companies who make false and sometimes outlandish claims that they cannot substantiate. There is also the likelihood that other class action lawsuits may be forthcoming.

Identity theft is a growing concern among Americans, and rates among the top five complaints received by states' Attorney General's offices. A stolen identity can lead to tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt in the victim's name and it can take years to completely undo the damage done to the victim's credit report. Identity thieves can successfully commit crime with as little as a driver's license number or credit card number, but the ideal target of such criminals is the Social Security number. With that number in hand, the identity thief can pass themselves off as the victim and open credit card accounts, bank accounts, and even obtain home equity loans. As more Americans become aware of the problems posed by identity theft, consumers are doing more to protect themselves. This has inspired thieves to look to a new source of identities to steal, and they have found one. They are now stealing the identities of children.

Established in the 1930's the Social Security Administration was set up to provide benefits for retired Americans. Taxes are withdrawn from the paychecks of eligible workers, and each worker is issued a Social Security number in order to keep track of his or her benefits. Over the years, and despite the intentions of those who created the system, the Social Security number has become a de facto national identity number. It is difficult, if not impossible, to engage in most financial transactions without providing that number to the other party in the transaction. In fact, the number itself has become as important as the name of the person who holds it. Over the years, criminals have discovered that by obtaining the Social Security number of someone else, all kinds of illegal activities are possible, including obtaining loans in the names of the owner's of the stolen numbers.

With more people now aware of the potential of identity theft, consumers are more carefully protecting their personal information. As a result, thieves are now targeting the Social Security numbers of children. A law passed in 1989 requires parents of newborn infants to register for a Social Security number for their child. That child will probably not need that number until he or she is a teenager, when the number might be necessary to obtain a driver's license, open a bank account, or get a job. In the meantime, the number is not only unused, but the theft of it may go unnoticed. Thieves who obtain a Social Security number of a child know that they can probably use it for a decade without being caught. How can you protect your child from identity theft? Treat your child's personal information as if it were your own, and guard it carefully. Don't give out the Social Security number of your child unless it is absolutely necessary, and if you aren't sure if it's necessary, ask. Some doctors and hospitals, for instance, request the number as a matter of course, but they may not actually need it.

Your child, if not working, shouldn't have a credit report, so if the credit bureaus have one on file, you may have a problem. Search Engine Optimization Wizard and meta tag creator

A lot has changed in the way sites are optimized for search engines since last year. For one thing, Google is not the only search engine worth looking into anymore; Yahoo has definitely managed to take away some of Google's oomph over the past twelve months. Another important change is that the intelligence of the search engine spiders and algorithms has increased dramatically. So without further ado, I will present you with a standard search engine optimizing process.

Keyword Research

Nothing can be done until you know what your target phrases are. Keyword research must be done to find out what people are actually typing into the search engines. For example, do they type in "medical insurance" or "health insurance" more often? Is it worth targeting the keyword "dental insurance"? What do your competitors think its clients type?

Keyword research usually begins by asking the client what they think are good keywords and by looking at your competitor's Meta tags and text. You then have to brainstorm to find new and related keywords that were not previously thought of. The use of Wordtracker, Overture, and Google AdWords' estimates is indispensable. If you use the "KEI" offered at Wordtracker, don't fall into the trap of giving it too much worth. It is a good tool to help discover keywords that have not been exploited by the competition, but the really important number is the amount of traffic each keyword generates. Finally, create a chart to determine the relationship between keywords used. For example, there is no point promoting dental insurance if your site does not offer it.

Texts

The next step is to write the text. Hire a specialized writer to put the text together. Ideally someone who has been trained in Internet writing, Internet marketing, and search engine optimization (SEO), or get advice from professional SEOs, marketing experts, and usability experts. Work with the client to get a feel for what is needed for the site. Then use all these skill to put together the delicate balance needed between selling to people, selling to search engines, and making the text interesting/useful to read.

Domain Selection

Once the text is written, come up with a catchy domain name for the site. Try to include part of the keyword in the domain, and to think ahead so that the domain can be expanded into the title. Our site www.gloriousbahamas.com is a good example of a domain with a keyword in it that is catchy and clearly stated. The keyword for that site is "Bahamas real estate", so having part of the keyword in the domain will help in the long run.

Title and Meta Tags

From the domain name, you can then create a title with the full main keyword in it (such as Glorious Bahamas Real Estate). The title is the most important text on the site. The Meta tags include the description tag, and the keyword tag. The description is what the searchers will see in many search engine results, so it must have the keywords in it and, more importantly, it must sell the site. Write a description that is objective, not subjective. Zeal has some good advice for titles and especially description writing at http://zeal.com/guidelines/style/site_titledesc/. The keyword tag is done just in case some engines still use it (though very few still do), so don't pull your hair out over it. Just list 10-15 keyphrases and try not to repeat any single word more than three times.

New Content

Now we come to the meat of today's search engine optimization. So far, we have not discussed anything new or original. It is the same strategies that have been used since I first got into the business of SEO in 1998. Today, with smarter engines, a site needs to be something that is cared about. A site has to grow, develop, and expand as if it were someone's baby. Gone are the days when you could build a site, get good listings, and then forget about it as it brought in the traffic and the dough. Take care of your site by adding useful content to it on a regular basis, and then the site will gradually grow from a few pages to dozens of pages. Not only will this make the site seem more alive - radiating with the healthy glow of a developing child - but it has the added benefit of increasing the amount of content the site contains, and thus increasing the amount of keywords found within it. For example with www.canada-health-insurance.com we add pages with more details about dental coverage or pages with details about government coverage for each province. Every month there are new pages, so that every time the spider comes back to visit, it spends more time at the site reading new content. This is one half of the key to getting good listings in the search engine results pages (SERP).

Link Campaigns

The second half of the key is getting good sites to link to your site. Going after web sites with related content, sites with good authority in your web site's field, and sites that are "popular" are the priority. Getting only reciprocal links is not the goal, getting the aforementioned sites to link to you because you have good, valuable content is the goal. Sites that do reciprocal linking usually have hundreds of links on their link pages and these will add very little value to your site. Don't waste your time with reciprocal linking. Only link to a site if doing so will increase the value of your site in the eyes of your clients.

A link campaign is a lot of work, and it involves a lot of frustration and rejection. You have to approach bigger sites and sell the value that linking to your site will bring them. For every 20 sites you approach, you will be lucky to get one to link to you. You have to be persistent, consistent, and determined.

Conclusions

Optimizing a site is no longer something you can do and then forget about. For a site to succeed in the search engines today, it has to constantly be changing and growing either in content or in links, and ideally in both. It has to appear that the site is the life and soul of its creator, and that somebody cares enough about it to pay attention to it. Because after all, if the creator doesn't care, why should the search engines?

seven stages in a romantic relationship: avoidance, meeting, dating, breaking up, establishing exclusivity, commitment, and keeping the love you find. Each of these stages vary in length and intensity. At each stage, there are thoughts and feelings telling you what to do and when to do it. You need to learn to listen to your intuition in each stage, so that you can make smart decisions.

It is important to note that the breaking up stage can happen at any time within the other stages; i.e., at any time you or the other person decides to exit the relationship for whatever reason.

In all seven stages, you always have these choices:

1. Continue moving forward

2. Stagnate

3. Slow down or go backwards

4. Exit

By taking notice of the signals from your head and heart, you will be better able to interpret what your intuition is telling you. At each stage, consider, "What am I thinking and feeling?" Are you receiving conflicting messages? Is your head saying one thing and your heart another? This is often the case, particularly in romantic relationships. What happens is there is an agreement error, a contrast between your thoughts and your feelings. This is perfectly normal. Just remember that you have your very own internal system of checks and balances. This system was designed to keep you safe. For the moment, it is temporarily out of order, probably due to stimulation overload. So, before making any decision at this time, go somewhere quiet' the answers will come with reflection and focus.

Once the answer comes, you should act quickly so you do not have time to doubt your decision. You should never feel trapped or unable to choose what is right for you. If at any time you do feel this way, then that is a good sign that something is not right with the relationship. You then need to examine what it is that is holding you back. If it turns out to be the other person, you are probably better off leaving the relationship.

A smart way to make important stage decisions is to mutually agree on what to do next. After all, "if it is meant to be, it will be," so you may as well start out making important decisions together. Couples who have good relationships know that it takes time to build their love. They make a conscious effort to progress slowly and purposefully through each stage, enjoying the process, while allowing their love to develop naturally.

Communicating with each other is essential to this process. You should be open and honest about your concerns and fears, so that you can trust that everything has been said and understood by both parties. Even if you find that things aren't what you would have hoped for, at least you know what is going on and then you can work on making it better.

Levels of Love

Most of us have experienced love blindness. We either think we love someone or do not realize until it is too late that we actually did love someone. You do not have to be blinded by love. You have the power to recognize it, but you must use smart decision-making skills to avoid making fatal relationship mistakes. In this section, work on waking up your awareness so that you will act in "knowing." The first step is to become familiar with the stages of relationships and the corresponding levels of love that you or your partner will most likely experience.

The key is to consciously place yourself in each stage. For example, if you decide you want to be in the "dating stage" then be fully present and make a true effort to make yourself available for dating. If, however, you find that your heart isn't in it, and that you would rather avoid relationships, then you need to stop and consciously put yourself back in that stage. This will help you to stay clear on what you want and enable you to honestly communicate to others "where you are at." Each level and stage of the relationship is a transition and involves psychological and emotional energy. As you progress through each level, you will no doubt experience excitement and anxiety, hope and fear, arousal and dis-arousal, certainty and uncertainty, along with a myriad of other feelings. You will need to work hard at balancing the messages that you are receiving from both your head and your heart to most accurately interpret the incoming, overwhelming information-it is very easy! to be misled.

You may find that you value some things less than you initially thought...good! This means that you're closer to deciding what parts will or will not play a big role in your wedding. If you and your fianc�½ have conflicting top choices...even better! Talk about where you can compromise or meet in the middle. This is the perfect opportunity to amalgamate your ideas and expectations to create a wedding that suits both of you perfectly.

When you fully understand what your priorities are as a couple, you'll be better prepared to make honest decisions that will get you closer to the wedding of your dreams. By properly identifying and understanding your priorities, you'll be more satisfied with your choices and will more readily stay within your wedding budget.

It's clear to me that a workplace is a better place when employees truly work in teams, but the most familiar team models we have are those that are created to win wars and games. We have a commander or a coach who gives orders, and the soldiers or the players use those instructions to defeat the opponent. Mediator Bill Ury says, "People are realizing that adversarial, win-lose attitudes in an increasingly interdependent world, where I depend on you and you depend on me, just don't work anymore. Using those tactics is like asking, &Who's winning this marriage?'"

Who's winning this company? Wrong question.

Consensus decision-making is a powerful tool for building nonhierarchical teams that can produce the best possible collaborative thinking. I am not suggesting leaderless teams and open-ended processes with no controls. Quite the opposite. I'm suggesting well-led processes that invite, engage, and expand capability and that lead to an effective and just way to make decisions, develop initiatives, and solve problems.

The prevailing method for conducting meetings and making decisions, Robert's Rules of Order, comes from military beginnings and relies on rigid structure, rules of conduct, and strict adherence to the rule of the majority. Often nearly half the people at a meeting disagree with a decision that has been reached. In many cases, by using a more open process that encourages dialogue and participation, we can arrive at decisions that are supported, at least to some degree, by everyone affected.

Consensus is a process of synthesizing the wisdom of all participants into the best decision possible at the time. It is not unanimous agreement, and in fact, participants may consent to a decision that they disagree with, but that they recognize meets the needs of the group or the situation. The root of consensus is consent, which means to give permission to.

Quantitative Decisions

When you consent to a decision, you are giving your permission for the group to go ahead with the decision.

Consensus is about accommodation, but, more important, it's about nobody having to accept that to which they are vehemently opposed.

The cooperative nature of consensus yields a different mind-set from the competitive nature of majority voting. Key attributes of successful participation include humility, willingness to listen to others and see their perspectives, and willingness to share ideas without insisting they are the best ones.

Some describe consensus as a transformational process. When we use the accumulation of several peoples' ideas and weld them together, the final product is better than what anyone could have devised on his or her own. The idea of consensus is not to eliminate conflict but to transform it.

At South Mountain Company we have used consensus decision making for seventeen years to run our business. At Island Cohousing, where I live, we have used consensus decision making for four years of development and five years of living. As the chair of the Island Affordable Housing Fund, and in many other facilitation situations, I use the consensus process even when it is not explicitly stated that we are doing so.

How Does Consensus Decision Making Work?

Consensus can be divided into five parts or stages:

Expression of an initial idea;
Discussion of the idea;
Synthesis of reactions and creation of a proposal;
Testing of the proposal within the group, and modification if necessary; and
Implementation and evaluation of the decision.

The fundamental difference between consensus and majority vote is that in a consensus process a single person can block a decision. Consensus empowers each individual in a way that majority voting does not. Majority voting can accomplish decision making quickly, but it also can strain relationships and the sense of community. In achieving a majority of votes, expediency can become more important than relationship. What one individual thinks may not matter unless that individual has sufficient power. Consensus often requires more creativity, and it often results in more complete solutions.

Because consensus can become paralyzed by one difficult, powerful, or dysfunctional individual, I advocate a backup voting mechanism to be used when consensus cannot be reached after a specified amount of discussion. In the organizations with which I am most familiar, this mechanism has been essential but rarely used. Aside from its practical utility, its existence assures more adherence to the consensus process- when someone is being stubbornly disagreeable, that individual knows that he or she is likely to be outvoted if he or she doesn't find a way to compromise.

Occasions do arise in which individuals are consistently argumentative for the sake of argument. They often characterize their behavior as "playing the devil's advocate." I once heard a facilitator respond to someone who was "just being the devil's advocate" as follows: "Thanks for your sentiments, but I think the devil has all the help he needs."

Consensus is a conservative process. Because it takes a new consensus to replace an existing decision, decisions tend to stand once made. Some people are uncomfortable with this conservatism because it can be hard to change a decision. To address this, some consensus proposals include a review period or a sunset clause. Requiring that the decision be renewed after some time has passed can encourage a group to experiment with new ideas without fear of being locked into a risky or unfamiliar path. It also provides an easy mechanism for incorporating new learning, over time.

One way to ensure that group time is not spent reconsidering previously made decisions when only one person-or a few-wants to do so is to require that reopening a consensus decision have a minimum number of supporters, say 10 or 20 percent of the group.

There are some issues for which consensus may not be an effective process. A classic example is style issues or color or design choices. Choosing the color scheme for corporate headquarters may not be the best decision to put to a group consensus process, because there is no best choice between blue or green; they are simply personal preferences. In these cases, using a weighted voting system on a number of choices may be a more effective way to get the job done.

Consent does not mean agreement. The goal of consensus is to come to a decision that everyone will give permission to, at least for a while. Supporters of a decision usually include true supporters of that position, those who don't really care either way, and those who don't fully support the position but don't wish to stand in the way.

Blocking is appropriate only if a participant strongly believes that a proposed decision is going to be bad for the whole group or to violate the mission of the group. If a participant blocks a group decision because of his or her personal values, that individual is essentially demanding that the whole group subscribe to his or her values. It is the facilitator's job to be clear about this and to remind participants of the powerful responsibilities that come with the ability to block decisions.

There are ways of objecting to a proposal without blocking consensus:

Nonsupport-I don't agree with this decision but I will go along with it. Reservations-I think this decision is a mistake because _________, but I'll live with it. Call for a later review-I would like this decision reviewed after ________

I am sometimes asked whether it is perilous for the employees to make the decisions for a business. What do they know? Isn't it inefficient and potentially paralyzing for decisions to be made by consensus by a diverse group? Shouldn't we leave the decision making to skilled management?

I speak primarily from my particular experience. South Mountain's governance system is a democracy with clear divisions of responsibility and authority. Much of the authority to act is delegated to management. This delegation comes easily, because this was the established mode of operation before the ownership of the company was shared. The difference is that there is now a clear mechanism for discussion, debate, and change. The comfortable delegation of authority may be one of the advantages of a company converting to worker ownership and control, and consensus decision making, rather than starting that way. Once the entrepreneurial leap of starting a new business has been achieved, adoption of consensus-based decision making becomes a part of the maturation process. In our case, consensus decision making has only broadened our view; it has not watered down our decisions or derailed our ability to make them in any discernible way.
